Can IlluminFx kits be left outside during the cold of winter?1. What are the different illuminators that IlluminFx offers? IlluminFx offers two different kinds of illuminators: the 2400 series, 250-watt, quartz-halogen illuminator, and the 6400 series, 150-watt, metal-halide illuminator. 2. What is the life of the light bulbs in the IlluminFx illuminators? Again, it depends upon which system you're looking at. Rated lamp lives are as follows: 2400 Series 250-watt halogen lamps - 400 to 700 hours6400 Series 150-watt metal halide lamps - 6000 hours 3. Which IlluminFx illuminator is right for me? If you are a homeowner who is looking to use your IlluminFx system for a few hours (four to six hours) a day, then the 250-watt illuminator is what you would want to use. The life of the halogen bulb should be enough to last you through a season of pond-side fun. If you think you'll have the IlluminFx on for more than six hours a day or are a business using the lights for extended periods of time, then the 150-watt metal halide illuminator would be your choice. With about 6000 hours of lamp life, plus the 20% additional brightness, this unit fits the bill. 4. How much power does the system draw? At 120VAC, the two different Illuminators draw the following: 250w halogen draws 2.5 amps.150w metal halide 4.4 amps starting current, 1.8 amps run current 5. If I own a halogen illuminator, can I change it to a metal halide illuminator? No. While the illuminator cases are the same, halogen and metal halide lamp plugs are completely different from one another, as are the electrical components for each. You would need to order a new illuminator. 6. How do I turn the lights on and off? There are a few possibilities: There are two toggle switches on the back of the illuminator, one that turns the power on and off, and the other controls the color wheel.Optional wireless remote controls are available for purchase, as well. The remote has switches to turn the power on and off, and to start and stop the color wheel. You can plug the illuminator into a timer, or a photocell, or other type of control system. Numerous varieties of these units are available at your local hardware stores. You can have an electrician "hard-wire" the illuminator to a wall switch. There is also an extra (brown) wire lead included for switching the color wheel. 7. Can the illuminator be placed outside? Yes. IlluminFx illuminators are rated for outdoor usage. 8. Can IlluminFx kits be left outside during the cold of winter? Yes. In fact, many have been left running during the winter, with no reports of problems. The effect produced by the lights in a cold, snow-covered pond is quite beautiful, by all accounts.
